"The Women of Qumar" is the 52nd episode of The West Wing. This episode marks the first appearance of Amy Gardner, played by Mary-Louise Parker, who guests stars in every following season of The West Wing.
Allison Janney submitted this episode as consideration for an Emmy. Although she had less screen time than her other nominees, her work was so powerful that she won the award.[citation needed]
[edit] Plot
It is C.J. vs. the rest of the senior staff—and the President—over whether to make public the possibility of an outbreak of mad-cow disease. C.J. is also up in arms about arms sales to a fictional Persian Gulf state, Qumar, known for its poor treatment of women. Meanwhile, Josh tangles with a women's group lobbyist over wording in a treaty concerning prostitution. Toby meets with veterans upset about the content of a Smithsonian exhibition about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sam is concerned about a lawsuit against the President involving automobile seat belts.
