It is located in north-central Uruguay.
The population of the town of Tacuarembó is 51,224 (2004 census).

Tacuarembó Department also shares the name of the town, which serves as the capital of the Department.

It was near Tacuarembó where national hero José Artigas suffered his final defeat against the Portuguese/Brazilians in his long struggle for independence. Subsequently Artigas left the country for exile, never to return.

The writers Circe Maia, Mario Benedetti, Tomás de Mattos and Jorge Majfud are from the city.
It is alleged that the famous jockey Irineo Leguisamo was born near this town, in Valle Edén, and not in Toulouse, France.
