List of Fullmetal Alchemist episodes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The episodes from the anime Fullmetal Alchemist are based on Fullmetal Alchemist manga by Hiromu Arakawa.[1] Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows Edward and Alphonse Elric, two alchemist brothers, who want to recover parts of their bodies lost in an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.
Fullmetal Alchemist was first aired on the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) in Japan from October 4, 2003 to October 2, 2004.[2] It later aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block in the United States from November 6, 2004 through March 18, 2006.[3][4] A theatrical release titled Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, a sequel to the television series, premiered in Japanese theaters on July 23, 2005;[5] and it premiered in the U.S. on August 24, 2006.[6] A series of five original video animations (OVAs) were also released. The majority of these OVAs are side stories and do not expand on the plot.[7] In the 20th manga volume, Arakawa announced that a second Fullmetal Alchemist anime television series is currently being produced. Bones will produce the new series and Yasuhiro Irie will be series director.[8][9] The title series premiered in Japan also in TBS on April 4, 2009. On April 9, 2009, Funimation began streaming the series with English subtitles under the English official title of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.[10]
The first series has been released in a series of thirteen DVDs from December 17, 2003 to January 26, 2005 in Japan.[11] Funimation also released the same series of DVDs from February 8, 2005 to September 12, 2006 in the United States.[12][13] MVM had released the first eight volumes in the United Kingdom; however, Funimation gave the rights over to Revelation Films.[14] In March 2006 a DVD featuring the OVAs was released in Japan with the name of Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium Collection.[11] Funimation acquired and dubbed Premium Collection during the end from 2008 for English release. The release date of the DVD has yet to be revealed.[15] During January from 2009, Bones released a "DVD box archives" of the anime. It includes the first anime of 51 episodes, the film, the CD soundtracks, and guidebooks from the series.[16] Funimation also acquired the license for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and each episode will be streamed with English subtitles in various locations around the globe, few days after airing in Japan.

October 4, 2003 | November 6, 2004 |
| In a brief flashback two young boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempt to perform an Alchemical Transmutation. Something goes horribly wrong. Alphonse disappears, Edward is seen missing his left leg, and a grotesque figure appears out of the Transmutation Circle. The scene switches to the current day and the brothers are seen walking across a desert. They arrive at Lior, where they hear about a religious leader named Father Cornello who can invoke miracles. Rosé, a young woman who works for Cornello, takes the brothers to him. When they see Cornello perform a "miracle," they realize he is performing Alchemy, but is ignoring the Law of Equivalent Exchange and think that the gem that Cornello has is the Philosopher's Stone. Feeling the pressure from the brothers, Cornello orders his right-hand man, Cray, to kill them. Cray however fails since Al has no body, and Rosé, scared for her life after witnessing Cray shoot Al to no effect, runs to Cornello. Al and Ed chase after her, and Cornello attacks them when they arrive. His failed attacks reveal that Ed's right arm and left leg have been replaced by auto-mail; he then realizes the source of Ed's nickname: "The Fullmetal Alchemist", and that the brothers have committed the Ultimate Sin: a Human-Transmutation. | |||

October 11, 2003 | November 13, 2004 |
| The brothers reveal that they were trying to revive their mother and they warn Rosé that reviving her boyfriend, Cain, would result in a similar fate. Cornello then attacks them, and they barely escape. To comfort Rosé, Cornello shows her a silhouette of Cain. He then orders the townspeople to attack and capture the Elrics; Ed transmutes some metal to look like Al, and allows himself to be captured, Cornello then takes Ed's State-Alchemist's pocket-watch, thinking it is Ed's secret to performing Alchemy without a Transmutation Circle. Cornello catches Rosé trying to visit Cain and he reveals the silhouette to be a chimera made of birds. He leaves her to be eaten by the chimera, but Al arrives just in time to save her. When Cornello tells Ed his plan to use Lior as the base for world domination, Al broadcasts it across town. Ed then defeats Cornello with his superior Alchemy, but Cornello's Philosopher's Stone turns out to be a fake. Ed and Al leave in disgust while Lust and Gluttony clean up behind themselves by killing Cornello and replacing him with Envy masquerading as the "real" Cornello. | |||

| In a flashback that continues through to episode nine, Ed and Al learn Alchemy from a very young age, taking after their father, who apparently abandoned his family when Al was still too young to remember him. They show their Alchemy to both their friend, Winry Rockbell, and their mother, Trisha Elric. Trisha encourages them in the pursuits of Alchemic knowledge, but she dies from a sudden illness and the brothers vow to revive her with Alchemy. They apprentice themselves to an unnamed Alchemist, and after their training, they attempt to resurrect Trisha. The transmutation goes awry and Ed loses his left leg, and Al his entire body. Ed then sacrifices his right arm to attach Al’s soul to a suit of armor, and Al carries Ed’s broken bleeding body to Rockbell Automail. Roy Mustang arrives unexpectedly, having received a letter the boys sent to his office, inquiring about their father, Hohenheim. Having seen the attempted Human-Transmutation, Mustang tries to recruit the boys to become State-Alchemists, but Pinako Rockbell orders him to leave. Ed pays Pinako for automail limbs and decides to become a State-Alchemist so he that can gain Privileged Access to the State’s Library, and find a way to restore Al's body (Al in turn promises to restore Ed's arm and leg). Ed and Al burn down their childhood home and leave Resembool. | |||

| On their way to Central City, Ed and Al stop at a train station where they hear of an Alchemist named Majihal (whose name had appeared several times in their father's correspondences relating to Human-Transmutation) who lives in the area, and decide to pay him a visit. Upon entering Majihal's village, they encounter a girl (whose appearance fools Ed and Al into thinking she's a paper boy) named Klose (pronounced like "clause") who tells them that a zombie has been murdering several of the villagers, her older sister being one of them. Klose petitions the brothers to avenge her sister's death, but Ed is skeptical of the whole situation. Upon meeting Majihal, he tells the brothers that the mysterious zombie is believed to be a florist by the name of Karin, Majihal's former lover, who died in an accident several years ago. After some more investigation the brothers discover that Majihal has been attempting to revive Karin by using mannequins that look like her, and using Alchemy to attach the souls of the village girls he's kidnapped to the mannequins. Ed discovers that Karin has not died, but initially lost her memories and has aged. Once her memories returned, she sought out Majihal, but he was already possessed by his passions of reviving Karin to recognize her. Majihal refuses to accept the wrinkled old woman, who has been supporting him, as Karin, and attempts to kill Ed. In self-defense, Ed knocks Majihal's weapon out of his hand, which flies into the air and accidentally impales Majihal. Klose reverts to dressing feminine, and the brothers continue on their journey. | |||

They take General Haruko, who happens to be on the train, and his family captive and demand that their leader is released from prison. Ed and Al fight back, however, and meet Major Maes Hughes, who helps them defeat Bald and rescue the General. The train arrives safely at the station and the military moves in to arrest the terrorists. Bald manages to escape, but Mustang demonstrates his abilities as "The Flame Alchemist" and restrains Bald. Mustang then informs Ed that the grateful General Hakuro has given Ed special permission to take the State-Alchemist Examination, which surprises and annoys Ed because of the implication that Mustang manipulated him.

The brothers become fast friends with Tucker's daughter, Nina, and her dog, Alexander. The Elrics' cramming is only interrupted when Hughes and his wife, Gracia, throw a birthday party for Ed. During the party, Gracia goes into labor and they witness the birth of Elicia. Ed discovers at this time that he can perform Alchemy without a Transmutation Circle. After the written portion of the test, Mustang forces Al to drop out so Al's lack of a body due to the attempted Human-Transmutation is not revealed. Ed successfully passes the interview and passes the practical portion "with flying colors" when he saves the entire prospective State-Alchemist group with his quick thinking, courage, and ability to transmute without a Circle.

| Ed, having passed the State Alchemy Exam, now is a "dog of the military." Mustang gives Edward a silver pocket watch, a symbol of Ed's rank and an alchemical amplifier. Edward writes a letter to Winry, his childhood friend, and Nina writes one to her mother, who disappeared two years ago and hasn't been responding to Nina's letters. Tucker, up for his State Alchemist re-certification, needs to pass or he cannot continue to care for his daughter. After Tucker's reluctance in answering Ed's questions concerning the talking Chimera that he created two years ago, Ed investigates at the Library, but is denied access. On the way out of the Library, Ed encounters a muscular dark-skinned man with an X-shaped scar on his face, and a strange tattoo on his right arm. After Brigadier General Basque Gran finds out about Ed's investigations, he orders him to cease and desist, and that Ed and Al have to move out of Tucker's mansion. Ed, on a hunch, sneaks into the mansion with Al at night, and they head down to Tucker's lab in the basement, where he has just finished creating another talking-Chimera. Ed then verbally places the pieces of the puzzle together and reveals to Al (and thereby the audience) that Tucker used his wife for his first chimera, and this time he had joined Nina and Alexander into the chimera. When Ed reveals all of this, he nearly kills Tucker in his rage, but is stopped by the military, who came to arrest Tucker and haul off the Nina-Alexander chimera. Ed uses Alchemy to crash the car and the Nina-Alexander chimera runs off into an alley where the man with an X-shaped scar is hiding. His tattoo reacts as he touches the creature, and he is able to understand her makeup. When Ed arrives at the alley, the man is gone and all that remains of Nina-Alexander is a blood-smear of a body that's been torn apart from the inside by alchemy. | |||

Winry, who has arrived at Central to visit Ed and Al, is kidnapped by a serial killer named Barry the Butcher, who disguised himself as a woman and calls himself Barry the Chopper. Ed who mistook Barry for a woman got kidnapped. Ed tries to free Winry and run away almost getting killed but was saved by Al and the military. The authorities take Barry away. Lieutenant Yoki, the military commander in charge of the area, appears and tries to collect taxes from the inn but a riot erupts and Yoki nearly kills Kyle, the inn owner’s son before Ed appears and saves Kyle’s life. Noticing that Ed is a state alchemist, Ed is invited to Yoki’s mansion, where he is both flattered and bribed. At night, the inn blows up, presumably by Yoki’s orders, and Al saves Kyle from under the rubble. Upon discovering the ruined inn, Ed transmutes the gold coins that Yoki attempted to bribe him with, and overlay the gold over coal bars. He then uses them to purchase the mine from Yoki under the guise of a money-less transfer. Ed then returns the bars to stone and sells the entire town to the people of Youswell for a single night stay at the inn, which he repaired. Yoki tries to fight back, but Ed easily defeats his alchemist, Lira, and becomes known as the hero of the people.

The original discoverer of the red water, Nash soon left the city and was never seen again after the townspeople began to develop a disease following his research. The next day, the real Elric brothers are invited to research the red water by Mugiar. They agree, free the Tringhams, and corner Mugiar by asking about Nash. Mugiar responds by attacking the Elrics using the partial stone. With the help of the Tringhams, the Elrics overpower Mugiar, but he escapes to an underground lair. Basque Gran, who was tailing Ed and Al, enters with soldiers, confiscates Marcoh's information on the Philosopher's Stone, and arrests Marcoh, leaving Ed and Al behind. However, Scar stops Basque's car and kills him. When Scar prepares to kill Marcoh as well, Ed grabs him and escapes, but they are pursued by Scar. State Alchemists were liberally used against the Ishbalans, who viewed alchemy as heretical. Marcoh was asked by Basque Gran to provide transmutation amplification agents in the form of red stones to aid the war, which resulted in huge casualties on the Ishbalan side. Mustang, forced to kill a pair of doctors, who were saving lives from both sides, allows Marcoh to desert. When the doctors are revealed to be Winry's parents, Marcoh refuses to escape to Resembool with the brothers. Scar, fleeing from the military, runs into Ed and Al again and destroys Ed's arm and a section of Al's body. April 5, 2009[20]
| This episode takes place shortly before the Lior Incident that opens the manga and the first anime. The Elric brothers, who have already made a strong reputation of themselves despite Edward's short military career, are called upon by Fuhrer King Bradley and Colonel Roy Mustang to hunt down rogue State Alchemist Isaac McDougal. The episode opens with Edward and Alphonse ambushing and successfully capturing their target. However, due to Ed's carelessness, the "Freezing Alchemist" finds an opening and escapes. The Elric brothers alongside the State Military are forced to confront McDougal again when he simultaneously activates numerous transmutation circles in Central, which creates an alchemic reaction encompassing the entire Central Command Center. Edward suspects the use of a Philosopher's Stone but is unable to confirm his suspicion. Thankfully, the Elric Brothers, Major Armstrong and Colonel Mustang succeed in thwarting McDougal's plans to bury Central in ice. The Fuhrer confronts McDougal as he attempts to escape, killing him in cold blood, later crediting both Colonel Mustang and the Elric Brothers in accomplishing their mission. | |||

April 12, 2009[21] | |
| Maes Hughes shows Mustang the paperwork concerning the McDougal incident, which states that McDougal used a Xingese art known as alkahestry; neither Hughes nor Mustang have heard of it. As the Elrics depart for Lior by train, Edward reminisces his and Alphonse's childhood. They learn rudimentary alchemy from their father's books, and after their mother's death, attempt to revive her by performing taboo human transmutation. During the alchemical reaction, a dark shadow emerges, grabbing hold of Alphonse and Edward, completely breaking down Alphonse's physical body. Ed awakens before a mysterious gate and meets a disembodied figure, referring to itself as "all", "one" and "you". In order to show Ed "the Truth", the door opens and shadows embrace Edward, filling his mind with information. However, he is pulled back from the gate just before he learns the secret behind perfect human transmutation. As a "toll" for this knowledge, the disembodied figure removes Edward's leg as payment, taking it for itself. Back in reality, Edward curses his actions in causing his brother's disappearance, and the disfigured humanoid the Elrics created in the center of the transmutation circle cries out before shortly dying. Using his own blood as an anchoring point, Edward bonds Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor, losing his arm to Equivalent Exchange. Edward's skill in both surviving the attempted human transmutation and anchoring his brother's soul attracts the attention of Mustang, who suggests Edward become a State Alchemist. Edward accepts, and after passing an exam with Fuhrer King Bradley, is given the title "Fullmetal Alchemist". | |||

Cornello sends a chimera after Ed, who fends it back with his automail, revealing their sin. Ed and Al escape, taking Rose with them. While Al explains to Rose the sin they have committed, Cornello finds Ed and reveals his plans, unaware it had been broadcasted to the whole town of Lior. Trying to use the Philosopher's Stone, it rebounds, and when he tries to use it again, he grows into a monster and fights Ed, but is defeated by his alchemy. When trying to retrieve the Philosopher's Stone from Cornello, it breaks, revealing it as a fake. Cornello runs off, but is killed by Lust and eaten by Gluttony. Meanwhile, to avoid being in debt to Edward for helping to resolve what happened in Lior, Colonel Mustang introduces the Elrics to Shou Tucker. Tucker, the "Sewing-Life Alchemist", obtained his State Alchemist credentials by creating a chimera that could understand human language. He opens up his library to the Elrics for them to study living creature transmutation, but they end up devoting time to play with Tucker's young daughter Nina and family dog Alexander. Upon returning to the house for another study session, they find that Tucker has created another speaking chimera in order to satisfy his yearly examination requirements. However, Ed is horrified to discover that the speaking chimera was created using Nina and Alexander, and realizes that Tucker did the same with his wife 2 years prior. Tucker accuses Ed of being guilty of the same thing, and Ed nearly beats him to death, stopped only by Al. Ed is left feeling helpless, while Mustang tells him that being a State Alchemist, he must prepare himself to take a life if called upon by the military. While Tucker is under arrest for his actions, he is visited by the scarred man who killed Basque Gran. The man kills Tucker and the chimera.

Just as Scar prepares to finish off Edward, Mustang and his soldiers intervene. Al contemplates this as a possibility, since Ed had something he was afraid to tell him. Ed manages to defeat Slicer by using Scar's destruction technique, but before he can get any information from the two brothers, they are killed by Lust and Envy.
