East Jutland metropolitan area, most populated area

East Jutland metropolitan area (Byregion Østjylland) is a term used by the Danish government for an area covering most part of the Eastern coast of Jutland. About 1.2 million people live in the region, which represents approximately 23% of Denmark's population.[1]. The area covers also about one quarter of Denamrk, which isn't exactly an overpopulated country. The current Danish government estimates that the area has the critical mass to get international visibility with Aarhus as the driving force and describes this mostly rural area as a city with weak signs of status as a World city[2], in line with cities like Antwerp, Dresden, Glasgow, Marseille, Saint Petersburg and Turin. One can criticize this view because outlining a region with more than one million inhabitants alone doesn't make it a city.

The area consists of 17 municipalities (see below) which have been invited by the national government to find common ground for cooperation.

East Jutland is by far the area in Denmark with the fastest growing population, about 10,000 per year.

1 January 2007-08 population increased by 10,428.

1 January 2008-09 population increased by 11,082.

The East Jutland metropolitan covers a comparatively large area of 9,997 km², slightly larger than the Greater Oslo Region (8.900 km²), but small compared to some other metropolitan areas such as the Hamburg Metropolitan Region (19,000 km²), the Greater Los Angeles Area (87,940 km²) and the Phoenix metropolitan area (37,744 km²). Oklahoma City Metropolitan area (16,500 km²), and a population of 1,2 mio.
