Daniel Joseph "Don" Givens (born 9 August 1949 in Limerick, Ireland) is a football player and coach, and the current Republic of Ireland U21 team manager. He was part of the FAI's three man selection committee in helping to select the new Ireland manager.

[edit] Club career
A centre forward, Givens started his career at Manchester United making a scoring debut against Shamrock Rovers in May 1969 but he played just 5 games before moving to Luton Town. He played for Queens Park Rangers for many years, before his career took him to Birmingham City, Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Neuchâtel Xamax. His time at Sheffield United will forever be remembered for the time he missed a last minute penalty in the last match of the 1980-81 season against Walsall at Bramall Lane in the old third division. If he had scored, The Saddlers would have been relegated, instead it was Sheffield United who were consigned to the 4th division for the first (and only) time in their history.

Givens made 56 appearances for the senior team between 1969 and 1982, scoring 19 goals, including a record four goal haul against Turkey, and becoming his country's leading goalscorer for a period.
[edit] Coaching career
Shortly after Givens stopped playing he became coach at Neuchatel as youthcoach but he quickly replaced Uli Stielike as head coach. Givens save the club of eventual relegation but Xamax's Board signs with its former coach Gilbert Gress for the following season. In 1997 Givens joined the youth setup at Arsenal under Irish team-mate Liam Brady. He remained in the post for three years, overseeing an FA Premier Academy League U18 win in his first season, before being appointed Republic of Ireland Under 21 manager in 2000.
In November 2002, he briefly became caretaker manager of the senior squad following Mick McCarthy's sacking, managing the team for a goalless draw against Greece. His tenure ended with Brian Kerr's appointment as manager in January 2003. He was once again appointed as caretaker manager in October 2007 following the departure of Steve Staunton as Republic of Ireland manager and was in charge for the remaining European Championship qualifiers.
Givens is currently preparing his U-21 team for the 2009 UEFA Championship qualifying group competition against Portugal, England, Bulgaria and Montenegro.
