51Sim (Sustainable Innovation Movement) (Chinese: 51可持续创新活动) is a charity organization based in Beijing, China.

51Sim provides platforms at the national (China), regional (Asia) and global levels for leading social innovators that highlight social entrepreneurship as a key element to address social and ecological problems in an innovative, sustainable and effective way[1].

51Sim works with governments, companies, not-for-profit organizations and community groups to effectively transform broad social issues in China by supporting the design and implementation of new and more effective approaches to tackle environmental and sustainable issues in China[2].

51Sim was founded in 2007 by two social entrepreneurs, Daniel Foa and Hiu Ng. Supporting 51Sim's ambition are a number of advisors providing valuable guidance and advice[3].

  • Sustainable Innovation Student Competition

The first annual Sustainable Innovation Student Competition] ([6] SISC), launched in June 2009, is designed to encourage Chinese university students to develop imaginative proposals for sustainable solutions to alleviate climate change. The competition aims to foster teamwork, creative thinking and increase climate change awareness.

The competition is a 51Sim initiative in partnership with Camco Global (China), 51Give and the British Council (China).

SISC has been selected as a key commitment to action by the Clinton Global Initiative Asia in December 2008 [7].

  • Green Cars

51Sim's "Green Car" project is a leader in the field of green vehicles; it has put a great deal of energy into researching and promoting the use of environmentally friendly technology. The Green Car project has been selected as a key commitment to action by the Clinton Global Initiative Asiain December 2008 [7]. There are two components to it:

- Green-car Rating System: 51Sim's Green-car Rating System is an evaluation system of green standards for cars. Enter brand, model, and delivery capacity of the car, the system will clearly show the detailed information of the carbon dioxide emissions of a car[8].

- Green Car Show: In April 2009, 51Sim took part in one of the most important global automotive industry events in 2009, the 13th International Automobile Industry Exhibition which took place from April 22-28, 2009 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre with a brand new theme “Art of Innovation”. During the Shanghai Auto-Show, 51Sim collaborated with JCAuto] to publicize 51Sim's Green Car Rating System. This initiative was met with a lot of success[9].

  • Virtual Tree March - Beyond Kyoto

In the run-up to the UNFCC COP15 meeting in Copenhagen in December this year, 51Sim is in the process of launching an online game in order to international raise awareness on the importance of the climate change issue and the increasing importance of finding practical solutions. The project has been approved as a key global project within the British Council’s Climate Change Programme and will soon be online at 51Tree .

  • Sichuan Student Education Project

When Sichuan was devastated by the Wenchuan Earthquake in May 2008, 51Sim sponsored nine university students to provide educational support to many of the children affected. For two weeks, university students taught classes to the children in order to help them continue with their normal routine, collected library books and helped with rebuilding efforts[10]..

  • China International Youth Arts Week

51SIM took an active part in the China International Youth Arts Week , which was held in the first week of July 2008. 51Sim helped to organize a special production of the Closing Ceremony for the festival. The ceremony, hosted by 51Sim , China International Cultural Communication Center (CICCC) and CCTV 4 was filmed at the Great Hall of the People to an audience of 6,000 guests. The show’s environmental theme was endorsed by famous Asian rockstar and 51Sim]’s Goodwill Ambassador[5] Chyi Chin (Qi Qin) who has worked on environmental awareness programs in China with the United Nations since 2003, and the internationally acclaimed and award winning Chinese film actress and singer Zhou Xun, who is also the first United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador for China.

The show included audio-visual content from Sebastian Copeland’s “Antarctica: The Global Warning”, part of the Green Cross International / Global Green Climate Change Initiative and live musical performances by world renowned pianist Kong Xiang Dong including his Olympics song ‘Forever Friends’ written with 3 times Oscar winner and 2 times [[Olympic song [[composer Giorgio Moroder; musical therapy innovator and multi-Emmy Award winner Gary Malkin and Peking opera superstar Li Yugang. The show has been broadcast in 68 countries during August and September 2008 on CCTV4 . [11]

  • Carbon Offset

51Sim 's commitment to sustainability and social responsibility has led to a natural partnership with Camco Global (China). Camco calculated that all the performers' international and domestic flights and ground travel, related to the week's performances and the closing ceremony, to equal 1,235 tonnes of CO2, which was offset by purchasing Plan Vivo Certificates] issued by the Plan Vivo Foundation[12].

  • Club Night

Prior to the closing ceremony of China International Youth Arts Week], 51Sim hosted the “La Boum de Luxe" Club night on July 12, 2008[13]. The event featured a host of international DJs, pop stars and artists from Austria, Switzerland, Dubai and China, trying to spread innovation through the medium of sound[14]. All proceeds from the event went towards rebuilding disaster struck schools in Sichuan province[15].

  • Great Walk to Beijing 2008

In April 2008, Olivia Newton-John led a team of stars from sports and showbiz, along with everyday survivors of cancer, in a 23-day extreme challenge to trek along the Great Wall of China. This challenging journey took 23 days to complete and symbolized every cancer patient's journey - with extreme physical and emotional challenges[16].

Every step walker took was sponsored at one dollar a step to fight cancer through the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre Appeal. The money raised went towards the building of a Wellness Centre within the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre[17]. It is be the first Wellness Centre in Australia to be based at a major cancer research and treatment hospital. The centre will provide complementary therapies to support patients on their cancer journey, treating mind and spirit as well as the body.

As part of 51Sim's commitment to encouraging community contribution and sustainable practices, 51Sim helped to hold a big charity gala[18] which was broadcasted through local TV, satellite channels and Yellow River TV]. The gala attracted many local donators and raised 600,000 RMB from local companies in support of [ https://www.greatwalktobeijing.com The Great Walk to Beijing]. It is also the first time that Chinese companies donated towards a foreign health center[19].
