- Cape Town starts reclaiming 480 acres (1.9 km²) of land on the foreshore
- 1 February - The South African Airways, takes over the South-West African Airways which has since 1932 been providing a weekly air-mail service between Windhoek and Kimberley
- 2 July - The South African cricket team wins its first test cricket match at Lord's Cricket Ground against the English cricket team
