The 1897 Atlantic hurricane season ran through the summer and the first half of fall in 1897. The season was a fairly inactive one, with six storms forming, only three of which became hurricanes.

Category 2 hurricane (SSHS)
Duration August 31 – September 10
Intensity 100 mph (155 km/h) (1-min)

The first storm formed on August 31 and lasted until September 10. It was a Cape Verde-type hurricane that went north and threatened no land. Its maximum sustained winds were at 95 mph.

Duration September 10 – September 13
Intensity 85 mph (140 km/h) (1-min)

The second storm formed on September 10 and lasted until September 13. It formed directly above Cuba and hit Louisiana and parts of Texas. Its maximum sustained winds were at 85 mph.

Tropical storm (SSHS)
Duration September 20 – September 25
Intensity 70 mph (110 km/h) (1-min)

The third storm formed on September 20 and lasted until September 25. It formed right on the west coast of Cuba. It hit Florida, Maine, and Newfoundland. Its maximum sustained winds were at 70 mph.

Intensity 45 mph (75 km/h) (1-min)

The fourth storm formed on September 25 and lasted until September 29. It formed in the Western Caribbean Sea, headed northward, and dissipated over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Its maximum sustained winds were at 45 mph.

Category 1 hurricane (SSHS)
Duration October 9 – October 22
Intensity 80 mph (130 km/h) (1-min)

The fifth storm formed on October 9 and lasted until October 22. It formed near the Lesser Antilles and curved around Cuba, hitting Florida, then going off to the sea and dissipating. Its maximum sustained winds were at 80 mph. The storm caused heavy shipping losses in the open waters.

Tropical storm (SSHS)
Duration October 23 – October 31
Intensity 65 mph (100 km/h) (1-min)

The final storm formed on October 23 and lasted until October 31. It formed in the Bahamas and went north, then performed a loop very close to North Carolina and went off into the sea. Its maximum sustained winds were at 65 mph (105 km/h).
