- The Aztec city of Tenochtitlán fell, and Mexico was conquered by the Spanish.
- 1520-66: The reign of Suleiman the Magnificent marked the zenith of the Ottoman Empire.
- 1521: Belgrade was captured by the Ottoman Empire.
- 1521: Pope Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther, and Emperor Charles V declared Luther an enemy of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.
- 1521: Henry VIII received the title Defender of the Faith.
- 1521: San Juan Bautista was founded in the isle of San Juan, north of Caparra. It became the capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan.
- September 6, 1522: Ferdinand Magellan's crew finished circumnavigating the globe.
